Why most divers in US frown upon spear fishing?

scuba diving equipment
RevengeWillBeSweetForTroy asked:

Many times when I shop for diving equipment and ask something about spear fishing I almost get kicked out of the store. I grew up in the Mediterranean and we spear fish as a sport, without using any SCUBA gear (even if you wanted I suppose all the bubble noises and heavy gear would alert the fish anyway).A large majority of people who love the sport know how to protect the environment (they usually are the ones who work the most to keep the fish alive and breeding). We only can remain in their environments for a very short period of time and fish have all the advantages against the human (unlike hunting when people use special scents, electronic equipment, decoys etc) So why one gets treated like a mass murderer when one even talks about spear fishing?

Scuba Diving — The very name invokes images of cool, crystal-clear water and ocean breezes.

Imagine life traveling the seas, searching for the wildlife that lives within the great oceans of the world.

Many people interested in scuba diving are those with adventurous spirits. Still others are people passionate about the sea, and others rely on scuba diving as their livelihood. No matter your reason and your interest in buying this book, here you will learn everything you need to know to start your journey in scuba diving.

Scuba Diving — What is It?
Before you learn “how” to scuba dive you should first understand what it is and is not. Scuba diving for many is a sport. It is one that can be fun and undertaken for leisure, or one necessary to advance one’s career.

Consider for example, deep-sea fishers or marine biologists interested in exploring complex underwater realms. For people falling into this category, scuba diving is essential to their livelihood.

Chances are if reading this guide, you are interested in scuba diving for fun, experimentation and leisure. You may have already taken a scuba diving class, or this book may be your first step to learning what there is to know about scuba diving.

Rest assured you will find this beginner’s guide a comprehensive resource catering to your needs.

“Scuba” History
Scuba diving is not something new. In fact, human beings have long enjoyed the sport of diving, or holding their breath and searching underwater for hidden treasures, including starfish, seashells and the like.

For years researchers and scientists have turned to the ocean to search for hidden artifacts or ancient wrecks, trying to find clues about our history, how we lived in the past and how our past affects our present.

Here is a brief timeline of events leading up to modern day scuba diving:

Early 1500s — The first diving bell comes about. This is a metallic chamber that people would sit in, attached to a large cable, that individuals would lower into the water to move divers from one spot to another. Supported by a strong cable, divers could travel great distances underwater.

Mid 1600s — It was not until the mid 1600s the first air pump came about, allowing divers to breathe effectively and more efficiently for short periods underwater. Around the same time, divers began realizing that deepwater diving could result in a serious medical condition called “the bends” if divers surfaced too quickly after long periods underwater.

Late 1600s — During the late 1600s, a man named Edmund Halley created a unique diving bell that allowed fresh air to channel in through piped barrels attached to the device.

Early 1700s — The diving bell was further refined, and engineers worked to create cylinders that helped divers by providing compressed air and greater water resistance.

Early 1800s — The first official suit for diving came about thanks to the effort of Charles Dean and his brother. This suit included a detached helmet to provide air to divers.

Middle 1800s — The military began training participants to dive and began recognizing the need for diving experts to conduct underwater operations. Around the same time, two men patented an underwater breathing device that included a compressed air tank connected to a mouthpiece.

Early 1900s — More attention to compression sickness came about as researchers and military officials began realizing the serious nature of what they called “compressed air sickness.” You will learn more about this dangerous side effect of improper diving later.

Middle 1900s — The famous Jacques Cousteau helped create what we now know as the “aqua lung” enabling true deepwater diving safely by supplying continuous oxygen to divers for specified times. Around the same time, people began making record dives safely, to deeper and deeper regions, up to 4500+ feet on some occasions.

Can anyone suggest good scuba diving for beginners in Egypt?

timbo262 asked:

We are a couple wanting to go scuba diving together in Egypt. We’ve only done a few dives each so don’t want anything too deep at this stage. We would like a nice 4-5 star hotel if anyone can suggest this near dive sites too. Any info about where to fly in would help as well. A trip up the Nile would be a bonus!

Resident of Krabi - Yellow Tiger-tail Seahorse

scuba diver
KrabiDivers asked:

Ringing in good tidings for the new year, a newly immigrated resident to Krabi was spotted by one of our KrabiDivers.com instructors on New Year’s Day. At 4-cm long, he appears pregnant. Yes, “he” was pregnant as the male in this species are the ones to get pregnant and productive!

Krabi, south of Thailand, is the gateway to the famous Andaman Sea where scuba divers and snorkellors from all over the world convene as winter approaches in the western world. Famous for its incredible waters, great visibility and huge variety of dive terrain, Krabi is a must-stop for all nature and water lovers on vacation in Asia. KrabiDivers.com operates the premier scuba-diving and eco-tourism center in the heart of Aonang, the sea-side town of Krabi. Here, you can launch off to the amazing Similans, Richelieu Rock, Phi Phi islands, Phuket and Lanta. And lets not forget the relatively unexplored local Krabi waters where the caves and caverns provide a great underwater adventure. And here is where we found our Tiger-Tailed Seahorse on New Year’s Day!

Seahorses are amazing creatures. The seahorse is one of four families in the syngnathiform family which also includes pipefish, flag-tail pipefish and seadragons. They swim in an upright position with their tails down and their heads up using their dorsal to move forward and pectoral fins for steering control. Also unique for their prehensile tail (able to twist & grasp),tube-like mouth (with no teeth), and small gill openings. Seahorses (like chameleons) can even move their two eyes independently of each other. Ranging in size from the tiny 10mm to 35cm, the largest is the Pacific Seahorse. Seahorses eat small crustaceans which they catch by staying still and lying in wait till their prey comes near, and they snap them up. Then their tube-like mouth creates a vacuum that sucks the prey in and they swallow their food whole.

Sea horses are unusual in a couple of ways. One is that they are monogamous and have long courtship periods when mating. Monogamy is unusual in all animals but particularly among fish. The longer a couple of seahorses stick together, the better they are at producing babies. It is the males of seahorses that carry their eggs in a pouch on his belly, after the eggs have been deposited there by the female. The eggs are fertilised in the pouch and incubated between 10 days to 4 weeks before they hatch. At hatching, the male gives birth to fully developed but tiny little seahorses. The natural lifespan of seahorses is not known, but believed to be from one year for small species to five years for the larger species. Highly elusive and difficult to spot in moving water, finding a seahorse is every diver’s dream come true.

So, you can imagine our absolute euphoria when we spotted the little yellow Tiger-Tail. Being creatures of habit, once settled into a location, they tend not to move too much. Hence, we can find it again and would love to show it to you.

Come dive with KrabiDivers.com and let us take you out to the amazing underwater world of Krabi, Phi Phi, Phuket and Lanta. Or join one of our liveaboards for the Similans Islands. We run fun dive trips daily. Our group of international instructors are available to conduct all scuba-diving courses in English, Italia, Spanish, German, French, Japanese and Chinese. Centrally located at the Sea of Love Plaza (opposite McDonalds) in heart of Aonang, Krabi in Thailand, come visit us if you are planning a trip to Krabi.
