    Some certification agencies may vary…

With PADI, the depth limit for a recreational scuba diver is 130 feet if that diver has the proper training or experience. PADI recommends shallower depths for those less experienced.

The ascent rate taught by PADI is no faster than 60 feet per minute (or 1 foot per second). Slower is always better. I personally shoot for 30 feet per minute if I am in a hurry.

132 for most agencies and it’s rounded up to 130 as a rule. Doug is correct in that PADI currently advocates 60 ft/min as a maximum safe ascent, which is strange since all other agencies and even DAN recommend a 30 ft/min rate. At least PADI adds that slower is better and it certainly is since every diver is different and there have been cases of undeserved hits following the 60 rule. Many dive computers have their algorithm’s set for 30 ft /min. Mine is by default and keeps me honest. Almost as bad a nagging wife when it starts to yell at me and a simple ” Yes dear”, doesn’t cut it. :)
